Department of
Plant Biology Laboratory Expansion
Carnegie Institution of Washington Stanford,
California The Carnegie Institution of Washington’s
Department of Plant Biology occupies a seven acre site on the Stanford
University campus. Their research is dedicated to increasing the understanding
of plant biology and ecosystem dynamics in order to mitigate the effects
of population growth on the environment.
In 2001 the department’s principal biochemistry
facilities were expanded by VDK Architects, and include new laboratories,
expanded computer labs, research offices, and seminar spaces. Window areas
were increased and laboratory workspace was reorganized to improve day
lighting and provide increased outside awareness.
In 2004, Building 300 was renovated to create a single,
large open research laboratory to house the department's expanding molecular
biology group. By utilizing modular laboratory casework and minimizing
interior partitions, the design team achieved its goal of creating an
open, airy and flexible laboratory. |
